Interior painting that starts with the prep

A fresh color is the part you see, but most of the labor in an interior repaint happens before the first coat: moving and covering furniture, filling nail holes and dings, sanding glossy trim, caulking gaps and priming stains so they do not bleed through. Rooms that skip those steps look fine for a few months and then show every shortcut.

San Jose interiors have their own quirks. Many homes in the valley date from the 1950s through the 1980s and carry decades of repaints, scuffed builder-grade flat paint in hallways and kitchens, and textured ceilings that need to be cut around carefully. Newer ADUs and remodels have the opposite problem: raw drywall that needs the right primer so the finish coats look even.

De La Mora Painting handles interior work for homeowners and landlords across the area. Gabriel walks each room with you, agrees on colors and sheens, and does the work himself, so the plan you talk through is the plan that gets painted.

Signs it is time to repaint your interior

Most homeowners call after living with one of these for a while:

  • Scuffs, fingerprints and marks along hallways, stair walls and around light switches that no longer wipe clean.
  • Yellowing or dingy white ceilings and trim, especially in kitchens where cooking residue builds up.
  • Hairline cracks at door corners or nail pops showing through the paint after the house settles.
  • A remodel, new drywall or an ADU where every surface needs primer and a first full coat.
  • Selling or renting the home and wanting neutral, fresh walls that photograph well.
  • Dated or mismatched colors from earlier owners that you have been living around.

How an interior painting project works

  1. Walk-through and color plan

We look at each room, note repairs, and settle colors and sheens: usually flat or matte for ceilings, eggshell or satin for walls, semi-gloss for trim and doors.

  2. Protect the home

Floors are covered, furniture is moved to the center and draped, and edges are taped so paint stays where it belongs.

  3. Repair and prime

Holes and dings are filled and sanded, gaps are caulked, glossy surfaces are scuffed, and stains or bare patches are spot-primed.

  4. Paint in clean coats

Edges are cut in by hand, then walls are rolled in even coats with drying time between them. Ceilings go first, then walls, then trim.

  5. Final walk-through

We check each room in daylight with you, touch up anything you point out, remove the tape and clean up.

What affects the cost of interior painting

Every home is different, so we quote after seeing the space. These are the factors that move the number:

Square footage and wall height

More wall area means more labor and paint. Vaulted ceilings and stairwells add ladder or scaffold time.

What is included

Walls only costs less than walls, ceilings, trim and doors. Say what you want included when you request the quote.

Surface condition

Heavy patching, peeling paint, stains and cracks take preparation time before any paint goes on.

Color changes

Going from a dark color to a light one, or covering a bold accent wall, often needs primer and an extra coat.

Paint quality and sheen

Washable, scuff-resistant paints cost more per gallon but hold up better in kitchens, hallways and kids’ rooms.

Occupied or empty

A furnished home needs more moving and covering than a vacant unit between tenants.

Why choose De La Mora Painting for interior work

One person from quote to cleanup

Gabriel quotes the work and does it, so room-by-room details never get lost between an estimator and a crew.

Ceilings and repairs in the same visit

Patching drywall, matching texture and painting happen on one schedule instead of three separate trades.

Clean lines at every edge

Taped, hand-cut edges at ceilings, trim and accent walls are the difference between painted and professionally painted.

A straight conversation about price

You hear what drives the number and where there is flexibility before you decide.

Where we do this work

Most interior projects are in San Jose, including Willow Glen, Cambrian and Almaden, and we also paint interiors in Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga and Santa Clara. Planning a ceiling update first? See our popcorn ceiling removal page.

Interior Painting FAQs

How long does it take to paint the inside of a house?

A single room is often finished in one to two days, while a whole house commonly takes several days to a couple of weeks depending on the number of rooms, ceilings and trim, and how much repair work is needed. We give you a timeline at the walk-through.

Do I need to move my furniture before you start?

You do not need to move heavy furniture. We slide pieces to the center of the room and cover them. Please clear shelves, wall hangings and breakables, and we will protect floors with drop cloths or paper.

Which sheen should I choose for kitchens and hallways?

Eggshell or satin walls are easier to wipe clean in high-traffic spaces than flat paint, and semi-gloss is the usual choice for trim and doors. Flat or matte is common on ceilings because it hides imperfections. We help you choose room by room.

Can you paint over a dark wall color?

Yes. Covering a dark color usually takes a tinted primer plus two finish coats so the old color does not show through. This is one reason color changes can affect the quote.

Do you paint ceilings and trim at the same time as the walls?

Yes. Ceilings, baseboards, door casings and doors can be part of the same project and the same quote. Tell us what to include when you request the quote so nothing is left out.
